Woman with head buried in sand, illustrating how negativity bias hides our unique talents and keeps us living on autopilot.
"Stop burying your awesomeness. Your brain is wired to hide your true talents and it’s time to pull your head out of the sand and shine!"

Have you ever tried to sit down and write a list of your most innate and unique talents, only to find yourself staring at a blank page?

If you find it difficult to pinpoint what you are inherently and naturally great at, you are not alone. Ironically, the human brain is wired in a way that makes our unique talents the hardest things for us to see. We can easily list our flaws, our mistakes, and the areas where we need improvement. But when it comes to our strengths, we often draw a blank.

Why is that? The truth is... your inability to see your unique talents isn’t a lack of ability. It’s a psychological phenomenon.

We are conditioned to fix weaknesses, not embrace our strengths

Already from a very young age, our society (unfortunately) trains us to focus on what is "wrong" with us.

Think back to your school days. If you brought home a report card with three A’s and one D, where did your parents and teachers direct all the attention? On the D, of course. You were told to spend your time, energy, and extra tutoring hours fixing that weakness.

This conditioning follows us into adulthood and also our professional lives. We become experts at analyzing our flaws, managing our stress triggers, and trying to fix our shortcomings.

Over time, we have lost our natural ability to recognize our unique talents.

We spend so much time trying to pull our weaknesses up to average that we completely neglect the unique talents that we would actually thrive in.

The negative bias of the human brain

Psychologically, humans possess a "negativity bias." Originally it was an evolutionary survival mechanism, where our brains evolved to scan the environment for threats and dangers like predators to keep us safe. So, it's just an ancient mechanism hardwired to us.

When you look at your life through the lens of negativity bias, your achievements and talents get overshadowed by daily anxieties, financial stresses, or relationship friction. You stop seeing yourself as an extremely capable and talented person with unique gifts, and start seeing yourself as a project that constantly needs fixing.

There is never anything wrong with you

We need to start realizing we don't possess "flaws." You are not broken or incomplete. When things go wrong, you are simply doing the wrong things or doing the right things in the wrong way.

To shift your quality of life, stop wasting energy trying to fix your perceived flaws. Instead, double down and focus entirely on maximizing your unique talents.
